Decision details

Museums Display Cases and Objects Security System

Decision Maker: Deputy City Mayor - Culture, Leisure, Sport and Regulatory Services

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

To purchase a new object security system.

Decision:

To release £82,000 from a £550,000 policy provision for improvements in museums in the 2020/21 Capital Programme.  The funding will be used to install a new compliant object security system in Museums.

Reasons for the decision:

To release the funding for the purchase of a new object security system.

Alternative options:

  1. Continue with existing system - The current system operates on Windows 7 and that will no longer be supported from January 2023.  Continuing with the existing system is, therefore, not an option.
  2. Removing security protection from objects and not replacing the system is also not an option as it would put objects with significant value at risk.  The Service would lose Accreditation, which in turn would impact on access to funding such as Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation programme.  The collections insurance would become invalid if sufficient protection is not provided for objects.
  3. Implement a new compliant system identified through a procurement exercise.
