Purpose:

That the new syllabus is adopted as the new Local Agreed Syllabus for the city of Leicester, for implementation from November 2024

Decision:

To approve:

           The new Religious Education (RE) syllabus is adopted as the Local Agreed Syllabus for Leicester City Schools from academic year 2024/25 to 2029/2030. This has been developed and endorsed by Leicester City Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE).

Reasons for the decision:

To meet the legal requirements which require:

           The Local Authority to review the Local Agreed Syllabus every 5 years.

           RE is taught in accordance with the Local Agreed Syllabus in maintained community, foundation or voluntary schools without a religious character.

           Academies and free schools must teach RE within the requirements of a Local Agreed Syllabus, set out in section 375 (3) of the Education Act 1996 and paragraph (5) of Schedule 19 to the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.

           Foundation and voluntary controlled schools with a religious character, must teach RE according to the Local Agreed Syllabus unless, parents request RE in accordance with the trust deed of the school.

           Voluntary aided schools must teach RE in accordance with the trust deed.
