Proposed Design & Urgent Maintenance at Gilroes Cemetery

Decision Maker: City Mayor (Individual Decision)

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

To carry out design works and subsequent urgent maintenance in order to prevent vehicular damage to grass verges and areas immediately around graves.

Decision:

To approve the transfer of £675,000 from the City Development and Neighbourhood feasibility budget for the design and urgent works at Gilroes Cemetery.

Reasons for the decision:

The Council seeks to carry out design works and subsequent urgent maintenance in order to prevent vehicular damage to grass verges and areas immediately around graves.

The existing traffic circulation is resulting in vehicles having to move off identified traffic routes in order to pass others.  Limited parking on site is also resulting in damage to areas.

Furthermore, issues with the existing drainage have resulted in flooding which, given the nature of the use of the site, causes distress to the bereaved families and cemetery visitors.

Alternative options:

1.    To allow continued degradation of landscaping immediately around graves due to limited parking and poor drainage.

2.    Carry out design works and address urgent issues caused by the parking and drainage issues.
