Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 allows the City Council to “confer the title of Honorary Alderman on persons who have, in the opinion of the Council, rendered eminent services to the Council as past Members of that Council but who are not then Councillors of the Council.” Such a decision must be made by a resolution passed by not less than two thirds of the Members voting thereon at a special meeting of the Council.

Council considered a nominations for Appointment of Honorary Alderman.

Councillor Rae Bhatia, seconded by Councillor Dave moved:-

“In accordance with the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, and by virtue of the Council’s policy agreed on 19th February 2019, that former Councillor Kiritkumar Doshi be appointed as an Honorary Alderman of the Leicester City Council.”

The Lord Mayor put the motion to vote and declared the motion carried.

Council considered a second nomination for Appointment of Honorary Alderman.

Proposed by Councillor Kitterick, seconded by Councillor Sahu moved:

“In accordance with the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, and by virtue of the Council’s policy agreed on 19th February 2019, that former Councillor Lucy Chaplin be appointed as an Honorary Alderman of the Leicester City Council.”

The Lord Mayor put the motion to vote and declared the motion carried.

The Lord Mayor declared the Special Council meeting closed and proceed to the Annual Council meeting.
