Education Research Project for Somali Youths in Leicester and area
Submitted by Samia Ahmed Elmi
Amount requested: £500 from each of the Evington, Spinney Hill and Charnwood Wards; £1500 in total.
Details of the funding application as submitted by the applicant:
We know from first-hand experience that a group of Somali youngsters are not attending higher and further education.
We are researching the reasons, and why newly arrived young people from Somali communities in Leicester and the surrounding area do not enrol in higher and further education and so are therefore not proportionately represented in colleges and universities.
In addition we wish to research why a disproportionately high number of Somali young people fail to complete their courses and drop out of college and university.
We would like to develop a provision to address the barriers that
young Somali people face and intend to approach the issues in
the most appropriate way by involving educational institutions and
parents.
According to an IMO’s (International Organisation for Migration)
mapping report the Somali population living in Leicester and
surrounding areas was estimated at 15,000 persons in 2006.
Most are migrants who moved to the UK from EU countries
such as The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. We have not
been able to obtain the latest figures (census will be released first July 2112) but we believe that the
census figures will show continued growth and therefore continued
need for the services that we plan to provide.
Despite having such a huge group in Leicester and area we
realise that there is no statistics about Somali youths and how
they perform in higher education. And presently no one knows the
scope of this problem, the reasons behind it, and no facilities exist due to assist those who could not enrol or achieve.
We aim to undertake a comprehensive and analytical survey to
accurately research the scope of this problem and to identify the
challenges that young Somali people face. We will then work with
providers in local authorities, schools, colleges and universities to
devise strategies to address these issues. We will also work closely
with parents.
The feedback that we receive will also be the basis for a communication platform – a web portal, that we aim to set up for these groups. It is intended to be a communication platform which assists young people to express themselves, obtain information and promote involvement.
The results we are expecting are that young people will be
assisted to achieve their maximum potential and will be enabled to
contribute positively to society.
The ramifications of young people falling outside of the system can be severe as failure to complete education can lead to many issues. For instance people without qualifications occupy lower paid jobs and pay less tax into the system.
They are also more likely to become involved in crime or
to become homeless. All of this has a negative impact on society,
especially if, instead of paying tax through working, the person is
incarcerated, suffers from mental ill health or becomes homeless,
thus using public resources instead of contributing to them.
We understand that there are times when these situations may occur amongst any sector of the population and any income group but we are concerned to reduce the incidence of these circumstances amongst Somali people.
We also wish to enhance community cohesion; the Somali
community is relatively new in Leicester and as such still face
the barriers of misconceptions and preconceptions that most
newly arrived groups face.
Our project will enhance education and contribute to collaboration between different communities by building human interaction and removing religious or cultural barriers.
The success of the project will be demonstrated by:
The research document will provide in-depth insight and accurate analysis specific to Somali young people.
Highfields and the surrounding wards
The research project will take place Oct
2012. It is envisaged that the web portal will be set up following the completion of the research project. The work will be undertaken in Highfields and surrounding areas but primarily within Highfields as this is the area a great amount of Somalis live. We aim that all the Somali youths living in Leicester and area (all wards) should benefit from this activity.
However we are starting with seeking grants with the above three mentioned wards – each £500, which have all Somali communities.
Similar related projects where representatives from the educational
department will be invited may be arranged for the future.
