St Helens Green Space has served children and families for over 60 years as a valued place for play, recreation, and enjoyment of the outdoors. In recent years, the park has deteriorated, with play equipment, including swings, removed and not replaced. As a result, the space is now underused and no longer meets the needs of local children.
The green space’s location beside a school makes it especially important to the community, offering a safe area for children before and after school, encouraging physical activity, supporting wellbeing, and strengthening community connections.
St Helens Green Space is also important beyond recreation. It supports local wildlife, including a large badger sett, and is used by the air ambulance as a landing area during emergency situations. These factors underline the need for the land to remain open, protected, and free from development.
In the past, Leicester City Council considered housing development on this site. Strong opposition from local residents led to these plans being halted, clearly demonstrating the community’s desire to preserve the green space for public, environmental, and emergency use.
We therefore call on Leicester City Council to:
1. Protect St Helens Green Space as a permanent children’s
park and community green space
2. Replace removed play equipment, including swings, and restore
existing facilities
3. Invest in safe, modern, and inclusive play equipment suitable
for children of all ages
Protecting and restoring St Helens Green Space will benefit local children, residents, wildlife, and essential emergency services, both now and for future generations.
We respectfully urge Leicester City Council to take
action.
