The Chair will introduce those present and make any necessary announcements.

 

The Chair and any other Councillors who are present will make any declarations as required by the Councillors’ Code of Conduct.

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING

The minutes of the previous Evington Community Meeting held on 19 June 2013 have been circulated, and Members will be asked to confirm them as a correct record.

 

16.

WARD COUNCILLORS' REPORT

Councillors Deepak Bajaj and Baljit Singh will provide an update on the issues they have been dealing with as Councillors for the Evington Ward.

17.

LEICESTER CITY OF CULTURE BID

A representative from the Business and Regional Development Department will be present to talk about the Leicester City of Culture Bid and members of the community will be able to find out how they can support the bid.

18.

COMMUNITY UPDATE

Local community groups have been invited to talk about any projects they have been involved with and to share information about their group with other residents.

19.

LOCAL POLICING UPDATE

Officers from the Local Policing Unit will be at the meeting to provide an update on police issues in the Evington Ward.

20.

CITY WARDEN

The City Warden will be present to give an update on issues in the Evington Ward.

21.

WARD COMMUNITY BUDGET

Councillors are reminded that under the Council’s Code of Conduct they should declare any interest they may have in the budget applications.

 

The meeting is asked to note that the following applications were supported and paid through the fast track procedure.

 

Ref 3002: Shree Sarvodaya Samaj (UK) – for their 40th year (Ruby) Anniversary Celebrations.

 

Submitted by:Harshad Solanki – President of Shree Sarvodaya Samaj (UK)

 

Amount requested: £500 each from Evington and Stoneygate Wards.

 

£500 paid from the Evington Ward.

 

Ref: 3004: Celebration of St Kitts and Nevis, 30 Independence “Thanksgiving Service” with entertainment and refreshments.

 

Submitted by Laurane Webbe  - Chair of the Nevis Development Association.

Amount requested: £500 or more – joint bid to Evington, Coleman and Knighton Wards.

 

£166 paid from the Evington Ward.

 

The meeting is asked to note that a funding application from Jumpin Jacqs, Children and Youth Venture was not supported. The event was due to take place in August.

Ref: 3006 Evington Asian Gardeners’ Group

Amount requested: £1500

 

The applicant has submitted the following information:

 

Evington Asian Gardeners Group was formed in 2011 but did not function formerly till December 2012 due to the delay in Grant from Leicester City Council.

However within the time scale of 8 -9 months of the project in existence, tremendous achievement has been realised with the grant of £1500 that has realised more £2000 worth productivity. The community of Hilltop  Allotment Society has been very supportive and in praise of this project, that has engaged 3 generations of a diverse Asian community of Evington and enhanced the green environment.

 

On 16th August 2013 Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP formerly declared the project open in presence of Evington ward Councillors Baljit Singh and Deepak Bajaj and many of the participants. This was reported in the Leicester Mercury of 17th August 2013.

 

The project is in desperate need of improvements in form of infrastructure and and the soil environment. Cosmetic improvements such  proper slabbed pathway as well equipment in form of drip irrigation for polytunnel as well various other equipment is required to create a model for future participants to replicate this kind of gardening activity that asserts Leicester City aspiration as Europe’s Cultural City.

 

 

The project will continue to create opportunities to engage the Asian men and the women to learn to create vegetable gardens thereby enhance their appreciation of the green environment. There are a lot of individuals who would like to engage  ...  view the full agenda text for item 21.
